Passport Renewal/Re-issue Procedure

There is no renewal as such for passport nowadays. They are re-issuing a new passport within a year of the expiry date of the passport. As usual, there are two ways to get this new passport - Tatkaal and Normal.

In Normal procedure, one has to wait for close to a month to get the passport. The passport will be issued only after the police verification. If there is no change of address during re-issue, then I think it may be issued little earlier.

I went through Tatkaal procedure and I want to change my address in the passport. As per the document finder, required documents are the old passport and atleast one address proof. But I have seen that the people at the first counter are asking for more than one proof. Another thing I understand after visiting PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) is that for any personal particulars changes in the passport we need to give a proof. For eg, Since I am married now, the new passport should have my correct martial status whether I am interested in changing it or not. Hence I should furnish documents like Marriage certificate / Annexure D (affidavit) to change the marital status. "Document Finder" may not give all the required document information. Check your older passport and find out the list of personal particulars which are to be changed. Make sure that you have all supporting documents before visiting the PSK.

One another thing is that if there is no police verification records in the system database for your older passport then you may not be able to go through Tatkaal process. You can go through the normal re-issue process. If you still want to go through Tatkaal process, you have to produce the verification certificate as per Annexure F (IAS/IPS officers should sign the verification letter) and Annexure I. Formats are avaialable in the PSK website. Even people who got their first passport after proper police verification are facing this problem. It seems that their data is missed during the migration from manual to computerized system.

Following are the procedures one should follow for passport re-issue/renewal. I hope that this is the same for applying new passport.

  • Login to PSK portal - http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink
  • Register to the portal and create a new username/password
  • Login with the username/password.
  • There is a link to apply for fresh/re-issue passport.
  • Just follow the link to complete the application.
  • There are two ways to complete the applications. One is e-form method where you have to download the application, fill it offline, upload it again. The second method is doing everything online. Depending on the internet speed, one can select his comfortable way of submitting the applications. I did it through online and it was quite easy.
  • Once the application is submitted, you have to take appointment to visit PSK. Prior appointment is required to visit PSK. No walk-ins are allowed nowadays.
  • Under the services category in the portal, select "View Saved/Submitted applications". Select the application and use "Manage appointment" to book an appointment. Appointments are opened every day at 6 PM and the slots are shown for the next two days only. Within couple of minutes all the slots are getting booked. So, better prepare yourself and make sure that you are connected through a high speed internet link to block the appointment.
  • Once the appointment is done, take a printout of the application (with appointment information) and walk in to the PSK. Make sure that you are there in PSK on/before the reporting time.
  • You will be allowed to go into PSK after the reporting time. Queue is formed before the PSK even before the reporting time.
  • In the first counter, you will be asked to provide all the necessary documents. I think for the normal applications they will check the documents and if they have enough documents, then they will be issued a Token. In Tatkaal counter, even if we have all the documents, they are doing a pre-check before issuing token. It generally takes about 20 to 30 mins to get token in Tatkaal counters.
  • With the token, you will be asked to go to A counter. They have big LCDs in the waiting lounge and you token number will come against the counter name like A1, A2 etc.,
  • In the A counter, all documents will be uploaded. Also, all the information in the application will be cross checked. You may have to show the original documents if asked for. Photo and finger prints will be taken. You have to pay the fee here. Only cash is accepted.
  • You will be moved to B counter and again it is based on the token. An officer will verify the details and will move to counter C.
  • In counter C, your older passport will be cancelled.
  • Finally, you have to take the acknowledgement to complete the process.
TCS is providing good service. It is hassle free now a days. The procedure and the process are straight forward and smooth. It is better to go in the first patch as there will not be any rush. I went in at 10:30 / 11 AM batch and it took about 2 hrs for me to come out of PSK.
