Chennai to Bangalore by Car

It has been a great experience while driving down the NH from bangalore to chennai via Hosur-vellore.  I have travelled in this stretch around 10 times in my Zen Estilo in the past one and half years.

This NH is part of golden quadilateral and the entire of strech of around 340 kilometers is very well maintained.  The route is Bangalore --> Hosur --> Krishnagiri --> Vaniyambadi --> Vellore --> Chennai.  The ongoing and the incoming traffic is totally seperated with very good dividers in between the roads.  There are six tollgates in between bangalore and chennai.  The toll will come around to Rs 170 for one way.

Every toll gate has Toilets for both men and women.  Though they are not maintained well, it is of good use for people travelling in this stretch.

I have travelled the distance of 300 kms between Bangalore Bommanahalli to Chennai Poonamallae in 4 hrs 45 mins with couple of journey breaks of around 5 mins.  The road stretch is so good that even small car like Zen Estilo can be driven in a speed of 120 kmph.  Almost all the major towns (like vellore) in the strech were bypassed with flyovers which is definitely reducing the journey time.  There are only few small towns like Ambur where a little care should be taken while driving in this stretch.

There are green vegetations on both the sides of the highway which will make the drive more pleasant.  You can find coconut trees, green fields and tall mountains on the side of the road which will be pleasant to see and feel.

On the travel, we can get Ambur Beef Briyani (which costs around Rs 20/- half a plate) which is delicious (for non-vegetarians obviously :-) ).  Fort in vellore is very famous and it is an important tourist spot in Tamilnadu.  The memorial of Rajiv Gandhi falls on the right side of the stretch while travelling from Blr to Chn in Sriperumpudur.

Traffic will be more till Electronics city in Bangalore and will start to build up from Poonamalle in Chennai.  Start your travel in the early morning hours so that you can beat the traffic.  The concentration of the traffic will be little more in Hosur and Sriperumpudur. Take care of intercepting bullock carts and two wheelers.  They will come in your way any time any where from any small space in the dividers.  While driving down from Chennai to Bangalore, please be careful in Walaja.  In Walaja, all the two wheelers will come in the opposite direction (near the older bridge).  Be careful in that strech of about 1 km.

I hope the information will be useful if you are planning to travel from Bangalore to Chennai or from Chennai to Bangalore.

Drive and enjoy the experience.  Happy journey.. :-)
